Alanna Moriarty:

This is Judith Lorber, a professor of sociology and women’s studies at the City University of New York. She has written four books about gender (in)equality in society, and about the social construction of gender v. sex. I am referencing her work for my research on Gender and Sexuality representation in the media.

children and technology

Photo Project #1

Lauren Sullivan/ Caption: This is a picture of a girl surrounded by technology. The people of our generation are constantly on some sort of technology and we are always in one way or another connected to everyone. We can find out any kind of information via our phone, computers, iPads, televisions, etc. For teenagers and young adults has our over dependency on technology effected us mentally and socially?

Project #1 Photo

My topic is studying the art of photoshopping the environment and other places to appeal to tourists. I chose this picture because there is a blurred background which could have already been altered to disregard an unappealing background.

Photo Project #1

Jane Sclafani/ Caption: This is a picture of a man who seems to be very happy playing his video game. I will use this image for my research project about how the media and certain video games affect the amount of violence amongst adolesnce in America.

Project #1 Photo

This is a photo of Chance the Rapper for my project on the decreasing power of record labels due to social media. After releasing his own mixtape in April 2012, he gained national attention and was asked to join rapper Childish Gambino on tour. Without a record deal he has since released another mixtape and completed a national tour selling out many big venues.

Project #1 : Photo

Jessica Sweeney, Project #1:Photo
This photo shows how media are becoming the focus of the majority of children's lives. In this photo, you can see that these children are focused on the media and are not acknowledging each others presence. I will use this photo for my project to help display how technology is affecting children's lives.

Project #1 First Photo - Reilly McSharry Dillon

This is a picture of Carroll Doherty.  He is director of Political Research at the Pew Research Center.  Mr. Doherty is responsible for writing and editing the center's reports.  The Pew Research Center is located in Washington D.C. and reports on social issues and public opinion.  He is Carroll Doherty.

Project #1 Robbie Litchfield

Alex Rodriguez (A-Roid, A-Dope, K-Rod, Gay-Rod, A-Fraud etc.) has done a lot to make himself the most hated player in baseball history, but has more recently found new ways to piss people off through the use of digital media. In the midst of a huge court case with Major League Baseball, the frustrated Yankee third baseman continues to put his foot in his mouth with some controversial tweets and texts.

This is my first transformation using Photoshop. I first flipped the original picture horizontally. Then I selected the subject and placed it on a background. The sign in the background says, "The Truth," which is supposed to signify A-Rod running from the truth. I also used "spot healing" to get rid of unwanted text on the original sign.

Unfortunately this is not a great picture but hopefully I will get better the more I use photoshop; it's a modest start.

Overarching Question: Are social media a new, positive way for professional athletes to interact with fans or are they dangerous tools that wield great, unprecedented power?

Thesis: I believe that social media are powerful tools used by professional athletes to interact with fans on a whole new personal level. However, with this great, uncensored power comes great responsibility, the responsibility to not abuse the power to do more harm than good.

Project #1

Sophie Ali/ Caption: This is a photo from a protest that occurred after George Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder in the killing of Trayvon Martin. The decision to not charge Zimmerman was based on the "stand your ground" law and some believe the killing was found more justifiable because of the way the media portrayed the two people involved: Zimmerman, an innocent white man who was cornered, and Martin, a black teenager who was looking to cause harm.

This is a photo of George Zimmerman after the shooting of Trayvon Martin.

Question: Do news media report crime stories in a way that perpetuates racial stereotypes?

Thesis: While not all news media perpetuate a pro-white, anti-minority sentiment when reporting crime stories, some major stations, such as CNN, Fox, and MSNBC, tend to have a biased tone to their reports.

Project #1 Photo

Maeve Gustafson/NSA & Snowden/Caption: This is Edward Snowden, a former NSA employee who leaked some major secret government intelligence to the public regarding government surveillance programs in June of 2013. He is currently seeking asylum (temporarily) in Russia, and is considered a wanted fugitive by the US government.

Project #1

Parker Thomas/ Caption: Below is a photo of the supermodel Kate Moss taken by the photographer Chuck Close. This black and white photo is a traditional daguerrotype which captures each authentic "flaw" of the subject and is not re-touched through darkroom processes or computers. The difference between seeing a natural Moss and the commonly re-touched Moss is shocking and comments a lot on how dependent our society is on photo re-touching.

PROJECT #1 FIRST PHOTO - Haley Clark. This is a picture of President Franklin D. Roosevelt conducting one of his "fireside chats" in 1935, all major broadcasting networks surrounded Roosevelt as he addressed the American people.

Project #1 Katherine McGuinness

Greenpeace used this photo in their campaign against Levi's continued pollution of Mexico's river systems. It was taken from a helicopter so viewers could see the massive sign pointing to the polluted water. They posted the photo to Facebook to raise awareness for the issue.

Project #1 Picture

Doryana Robins/Caption: This is a photo of a video clip that went viral. The model was changed by a program like Photoshop within 37 seconds to look more "beautiful" . This will help my research on how Photoshop is distorting ads and images of models that create an image that is unattainable.
