Katherine McGuinness Project #1 Midpoint Update

This is a side-by-side edit, the first photo is a picture of the slaughter of whales at the hands of the Japanese Whaling industry. The second is the logo for Sea Shepherd, an environmental conversation organization committed to stop the destruction of marine wildlife.

This is a photo of the logo for 350.org, an environmental organization who dedicates their time to raise awareness for the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. There should naturally be about 350 parts per million, however today we are up to 395 part per million. The photo behind it shows smokestacks releasing pollution into the atmosphere.

This is a photo of the Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina. Despite the rise of global temperatures, the glacier is actually growing, although that fact is debated among scientists.

In the background, a ship cruises through the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon (BP) oil spill in 2010. The offshore drill provided crude oil that would be refined into gasoline for cars. In the inserted picture, a bird is covered in oil after its habit was polluted. the caption reads "As always, there are direct and indirect costs to factor in if we want to establish the real price at the pump."

2. In today’s society, amidst problems such as the economy and foreign relations, there is a bigger issue that plague’s our country: the state of our environment. With every passing day, thousands of pounds of toxins are spilled into the atmosphere, ecosystems are being destroyed, and our natural resources are being depleted. Not only is this an issue within the United States but with the world as well. Often times, the environment takes a back seat to other political and global issues. For decades, activists have been trying to increase the public’s awareness on matters related to the environment. In more recent years in the 21st century, activist groups have begun to use social media to spread their message and call the public to arms in a race against time to help our Earth.
